There’s something about the ocean that just speaks to the soul. Maybe it’s the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, or the smell of salt in the air. For whatever reason, spending time near or on the water can be incredibly rejuvenating. And what could be better than combining that with some fun and relaxing activities?
Table of Contents
1. Walking on the beach
Walking on the beach is a classic favorite. If you’re lucky enough to live near the water, make it a point to spend an hour or two on the shore every day. If there are waves, walk along the surf line and see how far out into the water you can go before getting knocked over by one.
2. Fishing
If you’ve never gone on a relaxing fishing vacation before, ocean fishing is a great place to start. You don’t have to learn all the ins and outs of casting hooks, baiting lures, setting poles, etc. Instead, you can focus on enjoying yourself out in nature while waiting for your line to get tugged on by something delicious.
3. Swimming
Ocean swimming is fantastic for several reasons. First, the salt in the water helps keep your skin free of pesky bacteria that can cause rashes and infections, so you don’t have to worry about getting a rash in awkward places after spending an afternoon frolicking in the waves. Second, feeling the ocean currents move around your body can feel like a sensual massage, and the water pressure of the waves on your skin can be extremely arousing. Third, many people find that ocean swims are really helpful for training you to relax and get in tune with your body.
4. Surfing
Surfing is an incredibly exhausting activity, so if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, this one’s the way to go. However, it’s also really fun and relaxing if you don’t “go big” or try anything too crazy. If you get tired of riding the waves on a surfboard, consider getting a boogie board instead!
5. Scuba diving
Scuba diving is a really awesome activity that combines the fun of swimming with dolphins, turtles, and other awesome sea creatures, while also giving you an awesome workout. It’s impossible to spend more than a couple of hours underwater without feeling sore from kicking your fins so much, but it’s definitely worth every minute.
6. Watching a sunrise or sunset from the water’s edge
Sunrises and sunsets are a gorgeous combination of colors. Watching them from the water’s edge is an excellent way to end or start your day. If you really want to experience the full effect, consider going out in a boat for this one – if you can afford it, of course!
7. Relaxing with a book while listening to the ocean waves
Listening to the ocean waves is an incredibly relaxing activity. If you like reading, take a book out onto the sand and curl up in your beach chair for some much-needed rest and recreation.
8. Making sandcastles
Making sandcastles can be fun in and of itself, but it’s also a great way to play with kids. Grab a bucket and help some children build their sandcastles as quickly as possible so they don’t get discouraged and give up on building altogether.
9. Collecting seashells
It can be difficult to find seashells with all the sand in them, but it’s still a fun activity. If you have the time, go on a walk along the surf line and look for pretty shells that are not too damaged by the crashing sea waves. Feel free to pick up some pieces of driftwood or interesting rocks while you’re at it – they can make your beach collection more interesting.
10. Doing yoga by the shoreline
Yoga can be a fantastic way to relax and stretch your muscles. Doing yoga by the ocean allows you to take advantage of many different benefits – saltwater, sun rays, beautiful scenery, and so on. If you want to go one step further and really immerse yourself in nature and relaxation, consider attempting a sun salutation right after your beach session!
11. Taking a seaside nap on the sand
Taking a nap beside the ocean can be totally cathartic. It’s also an excellent way to take some time for yourself – nobody is going to bother you for reading magazines or sleeping if they see you lying down on the shore, so it’s the perfect way to relax and recharge yourself.
There are many wonderful activities to do at the ocean. Whether you’re looking for a way to get active, relax, or spend time with family and friends, the beach has something to offer everyone. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the ocean recently, we highly recommend adding it to your list of summer go-to’s.
